Building Solid Foundations: Coach Roundtree's Approach to Player Development

Coach William Roundtree brings over two decades of passion and diverse playing experience to the soccer community and is currently coaching at the Douglas Training Center. His journey began in recreational leagues and continued through middle school, high school (Coffee High), and club soccer with South Georgia United. He also had a brief stint playing at Thomas University, before transitioning his deep understanding of the game into coaching in 2017.

A Growing Coaching Pedigree

Coach Roundtree's coaching career began as a volunteer at the local recreation department, quickly demonstrating his natural ability to guide and inspire young athletes. His dedication led him to Coffee High School, where he served as the goalkeeper coach and later as an assistant head coach starting in 2020. In 2024, Coach Roundtree expanded his coaching horizons to the collegiate level, joining the staff at South Georgia State College as a Goalkeeper and Assistant Coach. Furthering his expertise, he also contributes to Doug Allison’s esteemed soccer camp at Furman University as a Goalkeeper Coach.

Committed to continuous learning and professional development, Coach Roundtree currently holds a USSF Grassroots license and a Class D license, with aspirations to achieve higher coaching certifications.

Inspired by the Best: A Tactical Philosophy

Drawing inspiration from the dynamic and tactical English Premier League, Coach Roundtree emphasizes a defensively solid and organized team. He believes in a collective defensive effort, where all eleven players contribute to making the team difficult to break down. While prioritizing a strong defense, Coach Roundtree also advocates for a possession-based style of play, encouraging teams to build from the back and maintain control of the ball. In the attacking third, his teams are encouraged to utilize crosses and execute quick transitions to create scoring opportunities.

"I try to replicate the style of play from my favorite league; the English Premier League. While defending is a big part of what I coach I still expect my teams to play from the back and take care of the ball when in possession. In attacking play I want lots of crosses and quick transitions." - Coach William Roundtree

With his comprehensive playing background, growing coaching experience, and a clear tactical vision, Coach William Roundtree is dedicated to fostering disciplined, technically sound, and strategically aware players at the Douglas Training Center.
